Article- Skinny Chicks Step Aside: Hairy Dudes and Bodacious Babes Are Taking Over the Runway By: Hayley Phelan

I loved this article.
I post some of my favourite.
Mark Fast- fuller figure models

Jean-Paul Gaultier-
Tuxedoed children, 51-year-old beauty Inès de la Fressange and size 20 models have all been on his catwalks.

Plus size models.

A Plus Size Model’s Battle with Anorexia toward a Healthier Look and Mind

I Stumbled across this article a the size of models is a subject that interests me.
It discribes how she was told to lose weight from an already healthy size, her battle with her weight and other models giving advice like 'just eat apple peels'. I mean models are people, they display art i would not like to think i would go out of my way as a designer to pick stick like models. How can i claim to be designing for women when i pick figures to dress them in with no relation to what any real female looks like?

Here is part of the article-
'Crystal lost hair, had no energy, her mood sunk to perpetually sullen. By the age of 17 her body rebelled. It did not want to lose any more weight. Other models gave her insane advice like just eating the peels off apples. Her agency chastised her. An agent pulled her aside and told her the only two options she had were plus size modeling or commercial work. Crystal had not even heard of plus size modeling, but it was this backhanded bit of career advice that perhaps saved her life.

Today Crystal appears in the pages of Vogue and starred in ads for Dolce & Gabbana. At a size 12, calling Crystal “plus size” seems ridiculous. '

Past Project - The JACKET

After dying my jacket with a cocktail of tea and coffee in a bath with my housemate i found this site on dying fabric with natural ingrediants and thought it was interesting.I would try to incorporate this in to future designs, as i would rather use natural more ethical ways to dye with.

5 Year Plan

Year 1-Carry on from my fda fashion degree to a BA in Fashion degree.

Year 2- Consider where i could live, if i travel, and applying for jobs, money and personal situation. If i have the money i could move out completely and travel where ever a job might be, like London or even abroad. If i have to stay in Bournemouth or move back home it would limit me to freelance or only applying to jobs in those areas or jobs completely unrelated.

Year 3-Pending on my decisions in year 2, i cannot predict where i will be. I would like to have traveled, and to be in a decent paid job that i absolutley love.

PPRD Questions

Tasks:
The fashion industry is based on predicting the future, but is there a future for British Fashion?

There will always be a future for British fashion, irregardless of the sucess and influence of other, worldwide designers and materials, as fashion is an integral part of culture - as long as there are people wearing clothes, there is fashion!

Investigate areas of
future fabrics/technology,
Tokyo Fiber 2009: Senseware.
An exhibition in Italy on modern intelligent fibres, including a fabric made of electrically conductive fibres that can detect pressure combined with its ultra light weight has numerous potential applications.
retail environment/the consumer,
climate change/eco-awareness,
This is a company created by the British Fashion Council made up of ethical deisgner fashion labels. These 37 designers have to honour the principals of organic, fair trade or recycled.

globalisation/trade,
British Fur Trade
"The IFTF promotes strict codes of practice that meet or exceed established and accepted animal welfare standards for wild and farmed fur. The BFTA and the IFTF strongly condemn cruelty to animals and their members do not trade in endangered species." (www.britishfur.co.uk)

the computer age/evolving forms of leisure/obesity.
I've posted this picture due to the Mail article -

"The sickening conspiracy that is the fashion industry"

This article discusses the decision that it will not ban very skinny models from being hired for London Fashion Week next month. As a designer myself i would rather have healthy size 12 models for my collection, i find the attitude that models "are just coat hangers" nonsence. Your models display your image, your idea, your work and i would rather have a model that is a real size as a representation of my work with a real womans figure in mind than a gaunt size zero.
